With COVID-19 shutting down the world’s supply chain, it has given the fashion industry a chance to reset the seasonal schedule which was adopted by Parisian fashion houses almost a century ago. And of course, the discussion of how the fashion industry is one of the worst polluters has come back to the fore.

And thus over the past few weeks, talk of sustainable fashion has reached all new highs. If this has been on your mind too, here’s how you can take steps to be more mindful about how and what you shop.

Organic Cotton

Traditionally, production of cotton takes a lot of water and chemicals not to mention how ethically it is grown/sourced. If a company, fabric, or clothing item uses GOTS-certified organic cotton, you know that it has been traced from start to finish, and highly regulated.

Hemp

Hemp is coming back strongly and for the best – it is extremely sustainable. Takes less water, does not require pesticides and does not strip the soil. It feels very similar to linen and is super breathable

Peace Silk

Although silk is a natural fibre, there is a lot of criticism on how it is produced. Peace Silk is a great alternative as the cocoons are harvested once the silk worms have shed them. Lastly, it is important to be aware of companies that use artificial dyes and chemicals to process the fabric.

Reclaimed

Reclaimed fabric is not the same as recycled. Reclaimed fabric is unused or leftover fabric sourced from factories or unused fabric that is bought second hand. When designers source from large manufacturers they are saving it from ending up in landfills.

Tencel®

Tencel is one of the best alternatives to fabrics like viscose as it is made from the pulp of trees. It takes less water and energy to produce than cotton and is farmed responsibly at eucalyptus plantations. Tencel is also known to compostable and recyclable, making it a sustainable favourite. It is also known as Lyocell or Modal.
