Caring for your clothes

What you can do to make your clothes last longer
1.Buttons

Buttons are the most frequently lost/repaired item in clothing. Remember to unbutton all your shirts the next time you do your laundry. They tend to pop if they go into a wash buttoned up. Also, remember to save the extra buttons that come with your new shirts.

2.Wash less frequently

Washing clothes often leads to breakage in the fibres. Airing your clothes will then extend the life of the fabric. Clothes that are elasticated also need to be aired so they can bounce back to their original elasticity.

3.Fold clothes along the seam

It’s always best to fold clothes along their seam. This helps the garment to retain its shape and you avoid unnecessary creases. Replicate the folds that your dhobi sends your clothes in and you are sorted.

4.Basic repairs

Knowing basic sewing skills is a lifesaver. Especially in situations where professional help is not at hand. Next time you are at a hotel, look for the portable sewing kit in your room. Stash it in your dopp kit for the next time you need a quick fix.

5.Avoid using your dryer

Unless in a bind, air dry your clothes flat or on a hanger. Not only will your clothes retain colour and shape, they also will not have piling or breakage. If the weather plays spoilsport and you have to use the dryer, run a cycle on the lowest setting for 10 minutes to get rid of the dampness.
